MISSION & VISION
Our mission is to empower orphaned, vulnerable children and youth to a life of self-sustainability while our vision is to radically transform the way in which they are cared for.
CORE VALUES
Best Interest of the Child
We believe each child and each child’s situation is unique. Their individual best interest needs to be the guiding principle and primary consideration for all we do.
Human Dignity
We affirm that all people have intrinsic, unique value and therefore deserve respect and an opportunity to thrive. Honoring this lifts others above ourselves.
Sustainability
We address sustainability from two directions. Lifelong impact prepares our children for independence and giving back. Operational sustainability ensures Horizon will be around for generations to come.
Symbiosis
We were created for relationship. Together we can pursue a purpose beyond ourselves and uncover the deeper meaning of our shared humanity.
Cultural Sensitivity
We strive to operate in ways that are relevant and sensitive to local cultural values and customs, forging positive ties with local communities and cooperating with governmental organizations whenever possible.
GLOBAL FAITH TENANTS
- We believe that intentionally and sensitively nurturing faith is vital to achieving holistic health and empowerment for the children, youth and families in our care.
- We do not force a faith practice but live it out in a way that is compassionate and compelling, showing God’s love in action.
- Unless local customs are deemed to be in contrast with our core values our global Christian tradition, we empower local teams to define and live out their faith at a country level according to their cultural customs.
- We acknowledge that everyone is on their own spiritual journey and desire Horizon to be a place where individuals can experience and grow in God’s love and live out our calling of empowering children, youth and families, together.
OUR HISTORY
The beginning of Horizon was earth-colored, rural fields of green and brown under the Kenyan sun. It smelled of burning rubber and tasted like street corn. It echoed with the voices of many children. It was 2004. A group home held 75 children in rural Kenya. There were shelters within a gate, there was food to be found and children running around. But in many senses of the word ‘home,’ it was no such thing. The children had swollen bellies, evidence of malnutrition. They were not cared for with dignity and love. They were housed, but they needed Home. This is the very ground in which the seed of Horizon was planted, surrounded by great need. That year, those 75 kids and youth became the first generation of Horizon when we took responsibility for the home, and this organization was born. Since then, we moved to two locations in Kenya and expanded into Latin America, providing safe places for children to live, grow and learn. The first generation of Horizon children are now adults. Their stories of transformation and their advocacy for today’s generation of Horizon children put the “power” in empowerment more than anything could.
